With your mind, work your way up to your ankles, calves, thighs, pelvic area, abdomen, chest, arms, hands, fingers, and neck, then your head. Pay attention to your jaw? Does it feel tight? If so, you may suffer from bruxism, which is the technical term for teeth grinding. Pay attention to your tongue, throat, and gums. Issues with your teeth can lead to other health problems.
Everyday mindfulness and dental hygiene
Mindfulness extends to all areas of our lives. That includes diet. Being mindful helps us control what we eat. Avoiding sugary foods and sweetened beverages is good for the tooth enamel. Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt, strengthen enamel. A diet high in fiber from fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and beans helps keep teeth strong.
Mindfulness even helps while sitting in the dentist’s chair. Some dental patients get anxious while having tartar scraped off their teeth by a dental technician. The practice of mindfulness includes slow, deep breathes to help us stay calm. This is true for any stressful situation.
