Congratulations, you’ve taken the first step in the journey to repair your smile! Before you are able to get dental implants, the prosthodontist has to check your gum and bones to ensure your implants will be successful. Though it may sound a little intimidating, finding if there is any bone resorption (also known as bone loss) is a very important part in ensuring your dental implants remain stable.
What is bone resorption?
When there is any tooth loss there is a great chance of bone tissue loss as well. If you’ve ever been to the dentist to have a tooth removed or if you’ve had a tooth fall out, you will find the bone that once supported that tooth has begun to deteriorate. After the tooth is extracted, the bone seems to just melt away. Dental implants, just like your natural teeth, work to stimulate your bone. Thus, in turn, keeps the bone strong and actually prevents bone deterioration.
Patients who choose dentures over implants and find their face caving are experiencing the effects of bone resorption. Dental implants are able to work as a more natural alternative to dentures that helps keep the structure of your face.
How can I fix it?
If you find that you have suffered bone resorption and you fear it may get in the way of getting dental implants, don’t worry. Bone grafting is a technique that EON uses that can ensure the stability of your facial structure and implants. Bone grafting transplants bone tissue from one area of your body (or a donor) to bone under your jaw in your mouth. A common area to take bone tissue for replacement is in the chin area. After taking the tissue and repairing the dissolved bone, getting and maintaining dental implants is a little simpler.
